On September
14th, 1943, the Greek submarine Katsonis was sunk by the Germans just off
the north coast of Skiathos. A memorial stands on the Old Harbour and a ceremony
is held here every year. A submarine is brought in from the mainland.
The Olympic Flame
arrives on the island before the Olympic Games in Athens 2004. The Flame was
placed in front of Papadiamantis' memorial at the Bourtzi entrance and remained
here for a week.
July, 2004. Greece
wins the UEFA European Football Championship and what can only be described
as mayhem broke out in town. Locals and tourists celebrated all night and
only the Portuguese stayed in their rooms.
January 6. The
Greeks celebrate the Theofania, the Baptism of Christ. The priest throws a
cross in the freezing sea and youngsters jump in to retrieve it. The winner
gets a special blessing and then takes the cross from house to house for gifts
and well wishes.

28, National Day. The Greeks celebrate the "Ochi" day, the No day,
in memory of General Metaxa's refusal to assist the Italians during World War
II. The local children parade down the Old Harbour. The same thing happens on
Independence Day (25/3).
Saint
Fanourios is celebrated on August 27. He is the saint of lost things: lost health,
lost friends, lost feelings etc. and a special Fanourious pie is baked for this
day. The pie is blessed at the Church of St. Fanourios and whoever eats a piece
will dream in the night of where the lost things are.
