Watch Out for the Evil Eye
Many people in Greece, young and old, believe in the Evil Eye. It is a very old belief that when we stare at someone we think is beautiful, nice, funny, has nice clothes or a fantastic toy, a qute puppy or kitten or is really clever we can put the Evil Eye on them. We do not do it on purpose, it just happens when we look at them. The person we are looking at will then suddenly get at headache, stumble, start yawning or everything goes wrong for them. This is the Evil Eye! Because you never know when it can happen, Greeks wear little blue eyes on them because these supposedly protect them from the Evil Eye.

The Evagelistria Monastery
There is a beautiful, 200-year old monastery on Skiathos called Evagelistria. It is full of really sweet cats and kittens and also has a few dogs and puppies. It was at this monastery the first Greek Flag was made and the Greeks believe this is a very holy place. If you go, there is an interesting museum here with hundreds of musical instruments from all over the world.

Pirates
In the old days there were lots of pirates all around Skiathos. They attacked the island over and over again and the locals suffered greatly. The most famous pirate was called Barbarossa, Redbeard, and he came to the island 500 years ago and managed to break into the old capital of the island. He took many locals as slaves and stole all the gold.
